Royal Ploughing Ceremony, Cambodia

May 26, 2024

A symbolic ploughing procession, conducted by the King himself, that marks the beginning of the rainy season in Cambodia, and traditionally predicts a range of events including epidemics, floods, good harvests and excessive rainfall, depending on what the royal oxen choose from a selection of seven golden trays. The trays contain rice, corn, beans, sesame seeds, grass, water and wine—Lao expect a good harvest will be good if they choose the seed options, there will be more rain than usual if they choose the water, but a bad year is predicted by the oxen choosing alcohol.
