Cambodia is set to highlight its rich Muslim cultural heritage and rural lifestyles as part of an initiative to boost domestic and international tourism. Known for its remarkable cultural diversity and iconic ancient temples, the kingdom is now presenting foreign visitors with the opportunity to explore century-old Muslim communities and cultural identities that have been preserved in remote villages.

The Cambodian Tourism Ministry is organizing a special cultural event, themed “Assalamualaikum Cambodia: A Safe, Warm and Friendly Destination”, from October 9 to 11 at the Al-Serkal Mosque in Phnom Penh. The fair is aimed at attracting more Muslim tourists to the country, highlighting the unique offerings of Cambodian Muslim culture.

Muslims make up about five percent of Cambodia’s population, which totals 17 million people. This community, numbering approximately 800,000 individuals, is a small yet integral part of the nation’s cultural fabric. Their presence is especially prominent in regions where Islam has long been practiced, with distinct customs, heritage, and traditions that are deeply embedded in local rural life.

Cambodia’s tourism sector is globally recognized for its UNESCO World Heritage Sites, such as the Angkor Wat Temple complex and Preah Vihear Temple, which continue to draw millions of visitors annually. These historical landmarks, along with the country’s exotic islands, vibrant night markets, and ancient ruins, are major attractions for travelers. However, Cambodia is increasingly focusing on broadening its appeal by emphasizing its diversity, offering travelers the opportunity to explore lesser-known yet equally rich cultural experiences, such as those found in its Muslim communities.

In recent years, Cambodia has experienced a steady rise in international tourists, with approximately six million foreign visitors arriving last year. Among these, nearly half a million were Muslim travelers, highlighting the potential for further growth in this segment. The government is actively working to strengthen the infrastructure necessary to make the country an even more attractive destination for Muslim tourists, with a focus on enhancing accessibility and connectivity.

A key development in this regard is the launch of the Techo International Airport in September 2025. The $1.5 billion project, which commenced operations on September 9, is expected to significantly improve Cambodia’s transport network, providing better access to the kingdom for both regional and international travelers. This airport is a part of Cambodia’s broader effort to enhance its position as a leading tourist hub within the ASEAN region.

To further support the growing number of Muslim visitors, the Cambodian government is implementing a range of strategies designed to cater to their specific needs. These strategies include increasing the availability of halal-certified food, expanding mosque facilities for prayer, and ensuring that accommodation and services align with the requirements of Muslim travelers.

In addition to improving infrastructure, Cambodia’s tourism ministry is also working on raising awareness about the country’s diverse cultural offerings. The “Assalamualaikum Cambodia” fair is one such initiative, with the goal of showcasing the kingdom’s Muslim heritage in a vibrant and engaging manner. This event not only aims to attract Muslim tourists but also to foster greater understanding and cultural exchange between Cambodia’s diverse communities.

The growing interest in Cambodia as a destination for Muslim tourists is also fueled by the country’s reputation for safety and hospitality. In recent years, the kingdom has been recognized for its warm and welcoming atmosphere, with many visitors praising the kindness and generosity of the Cambodian people. This reputation is particularly appealing to Muslim travelers, who value destinations where their cultural and religious needs are respected.

As Cambodia continues to develop its tourism sector, the government is placing a strong emphasis on sustainable and inclusive tourism. The promotion of Muslim cultural heritage is just one example of how the country is diversifying its tourism offerings to cater to different segments of the global market. By highlighting its unique Muslim communities and rural lifestyles, Cambodia is positioning itself as a welcoming and diverse destination that appeals to travelers seeking both adventure and cultural enrichment.

The Cambodian government’s focus on enhancing its tourism infrastructure, coupled with its efforts to promote its Muslim heritage, is set to play a pivotal role in shaping the kingdom’s future as a key destination for Muslim tourists. With a rich cultural landscape, a commitment to inclusivity, and a growing infrastructure, Cambodia is poised to become an increasingly important player in the global tourism market, particularly in the ASEAN region.

As Cambodia continues to make strides in its tourism development, events like “Assalamualaikum Cambodia” will play a crucial role in showcasing the country’s multicultural identity, fostering greater engagement with Muslim travelers, and ensuring that the kingdom remains an attractive and accessible destination for years to come.
