Cambodia Hosts MTF 2023 Delegates To A Meaningful Community-Based Ecotourism Experience in Koh Rong

Ministry of Tourism of Cambodia, as the host of the Mekong Tourism Forum (MTF) 2023, invited all delegates to join a unique technical tour on 27 April, 2023.

Exclusive for MTF delegates, the tour was designed to showcase the iconic seascape of Koh Rong, the second largest island of Cambodia. Delegates also had the chance to visit and participate in a purposeful community-based ecotourism program.

The journey started with a 45-minute speedboat ride from Sihanoukville to Koh Rong. MTF delegates first arrived at Mafiya’s Resort, which was named after the owner’s beloved daughter. The group was welcomed by warm smiles and fresh coconuts to cool down from the heat. Delegates took turns enjoying different activities the resort offered, including swimming, kayaking, cycling, or just chilling by the beach. Located on a secluded island with pristine beaches, emerald water and soaring coconut palms, the Mafiya’s Resort is an ideal hideaway for any travelers.

The MTF delegation then headed to Prek Koang Kang Ecotourism Community. This community comprises more than ten families joining hands to protect the valuable mangroves ecosystem. Knowledgeable tour guides explained the importance of mangroves in preserving the island’s ecosystem. Delegates enjoyed a simple local lunch at the visitor center before spreading out to explore the mangroves by walking, kayaking or boat. Following the canals, delegates also got their hands on planting mangrove trees for the local community.

After bidding farewell to the kind hosts, delegates returned to the pier and board the speedboat back to the city of Sihanoukville. The final stop was the Ream Bay, home to the “Bay of Lights” – one of Cambodia’s most massive development projects. Tourism is announced as one of the six key pillars of this development.

Delegates met with representatives from Canopy Sand Development, the lead developer of this project, and got an overview of its vision, mission and timeline to transform Cambodia’s coastline and boost tourism. Sihanoukville’s tourism is expected to bloom into full potential with such promising projects under implementation.

The success of this one-day technical tour wrapped up MTF 2023.
