The Street-long Feast of Hani People, Yunnan, China

November 30, 2024

Imagine a public feast with tables extending over a street! You are in for such a treat during Hani people’s Shiyuenian, or the 10th Lunar Month Festival, which starts on the first “dragon day” of the month. For this ethnic group living on Ailao Mountains (Ailao Shan), it’s a post-harvest public carnival to be proudly celebrated with a Street-long Feast (Changjieyan) as well as the usual singing, dancing and family reunions. The largest of this epicurean party falls on November 30th at Luchun, where thousands of people will gather up and bond with each other in a meaty, boozy, buzzy way.
