Ghe Ngo Boat Race, Viet Nam

The Khmer of Can Tho, Vietnam celebrate the traditional “Ok Om Bok” moon festival by racing traditional Khmer boats – demanding rhythm and precise coordination to maneuver – in time with the sounds of gongs and cheers from the crowd. The boats are usually some 25 to 30 m, with a snakelike appearance and capacity for 40 to 60 rowers. The biggest race is usually in Soc Trang province, where upward of 60 boats compete for laurels on the Maspero river race course. (Vietnam Tourism Ministry)
