Spring Angkor Wat Equinox to occur on March 21

Apsara Authority announced today that the Spring Angkor Wat Equinox will occur on March 21, affording the public and tourists a chance to visit and take pictures.

According to Apsara Authority an equinox is when the duration of day and night is equal and on that day the sun will rise exactly over the central peak of Angkor Wat, which can be viewed from the western entrance.

It said that this year, the special sunrise event will occur twice, once on March 21 and again on September 22. It urged the public as well as tourists to come and take great pictures of this great event.

The equinox spectacle at Angkor Wat is not a coincidence. It is a feature of the Khmer ancestors who prepared the architecture of the temple in advance, with the intention of adjusting the natural phenomena for Angkor Wat to have sunrise occur at the top of temple.

According to a recent report by the state-owned Angkor Enterprise, the famous UNESCO World Heritage Centre Angkor Archaeological Park, attracted 287,454 foreign tourists and earned $11.5 million last year.
