According to the National-level Committee on Geoparks, new geosites are being identified for Mount Popa National Geopark, Myanmar’s first national-level geopark, in order to gain recognition as a global geopark.

Among several promising locations in Myanmar, Mount Popa was declared the country’s first national geopark on 6 December 2023 due to its exceptional potential.
Efforts are underway to increase the number of proposed geosites from 15 to 30, as it is crucial to identify a diverse range of geological sites for Mount Popa to qualify as a UNESCO global geopark.
Various organizations, academic institutions, and research groups will collaborate on this project, which, if successful, will raise international awareness of Myanmar’s rich natural resources and cultural heritage.
