The Cambodian government will establish a water link between Kep province and Vietnam’s Phu Quoc Island to develop the tourism sector in the area, with speed boats providing transport between the two places, Tourism Minister Thong Khon said yesterday.

He said that the ministry and the Kep provincial authority had already studied the proposal and are in preparations to open the international waterway for tourists to travel between Koh Tonsay in Kep province and Phu Quoc Island.

He added that the main purpose of establishing the water link was to attract foreign tourists travelling in Vietnam to the Kingdom and generate jobs and income for Cambodians living in nearby coastal areas.

Kep Provincial Administration spokesman Chhun Chanvanthon told Khmer Times yesterday that Kep is one of Cambodia’s most attractive seaside destinations.

Chanvanthon said that there are four main tourist spots and many other potential tourist attractions including islands, waterfalls, the Kong Kang forest area, mountains, zoos and excellent infrastructure.

To add to these attractions, the province also has delicious food, convenient transport and abundant accommodation, which are all cheap.

He went on to say that the Kep provincial authority has also constructed a port to international standards, where many types of ships can dock.

He added that there are also many types of tourist boats and speed boats in the province.

“I hope that when this waterway opens more foreign tourists will visit Kep, which will create many types of jobs, especially selling products, for local Cambodians,” Chanvanthon said.

In a separate case, Ministry of Tourism spokesman Top Sopheak said that to promote tourism, the Ministry of Tourism will host “Cambodia Tourism Roadshow” in Jakarta, Indonesia, from June 21 to 25.

“The main purpose of the event is to promote Cambodia’s tourism sites and attract international tourists especially sport tourists as Cambodia will host the SEA GAMES 2023, next year,” he said.

He noted that the ministry’s roadshow is in line with the government’s vision to promote and restore the tourism sector in the Kingdom after the Covid-19 crisis.

He added that the Ministry of Tourism also plans to host the same event in Vietnam and Singapore later this year.

He called on all the tourism associations, tour operators and others in the private sector to participate in this event and to seize the opportunity to promote and sell their tour packages in the Indonesian market.
