Phayanak Festival, Thailand

October 29, 2023

Nong Khai’s Phaya Naga Cave (Wat Thai), set on the banks of the Mekong, is the most popular viewing point for Naga fireballs in Nong Khai Province. On Awk Phansa (end of Buddhist Lent) tourists gather to see the spectacular natural lights against the statue of Phraya Phisai Sattanakharat. The “fireballs” are reddish in colour, ranging in size from tiny bubbles to basketball-sized globes; all shooting up from the river for as high as 180 metres before vanishing. Other festivities include food stalls, longboat races, light and sound shows, a night bazaar, and the Phon Phisai parade. (Tourism Authority of Thailand)
