An event that happens once every two years, the Kayin (or Karen) New Year celebrations in Myanmar revolve all around the third largest ethnic minority in the country. With an approximate 7 million Karen residing in the country, the festivities of welcoming in their new year take centre stage in their home state of Kayin.
The New Year comes on the first day of Pyatho, the month that comes at the end of rice harvest time and commemorates their historic migration into Myanmar from Mongolia close to 2700 years ago. Since 2009, this is an official public holiday in Myanmar.
