Kahtein Robe Weaving Competitions, Myanmar

November 14, 2024

For centuries, devotees at Shwedagon Pagoda, Yangon, and other pagodas throughout the country have held robe weaving competitions (Matho Thingan) during the Tazaungdaing Festiva. that marks the end of Buddhist Lent. The robe must be completed within one night, as it is offered to Buddha’s image next morning. On the streets, locals offer alms to passing monks and serve “Satuditha” feasts for all comers. True to its nickname “Festival of Lights”, the evening finds colourful illuminations, like colourful light-bulbs and lanterns, hung from eaves all across Myanmar. (Myanmar Tourism Ministry)
