Horse Race Festival, Yunnan, China

Yunnan celebrates the traditional Dragon Boat Festival date, the fifth day of the fifth lunar month, with a Horse Race Festival instead. The Tibetan ethnic community show off their traditional equestrian skills through horse races, acrobatics and other competitive horse-riding feats. These shows of horsemanship are a demonstration of an important Tibetan life-skill, enabling the elders to pass their heritage down to the next generation. The main events take place in Shangri-La (formerly Zhongdian), at the 25,000-seat Shangri-La County Stadium.
