Amidst the ongoing precarity and unpredictability of the Covid-19 pandemic, the Tourism Ministry has embarked on a unique new campaign to attract foreign visitors to Cambodia by highlighting the visits of 35 world-famous celebrities to Angkor Wat.
This ambitious campaign which was announced on Monday is expected to spark an interest among foreign tourists who seek escapism from the Covid-19 pandemic fear and want to travel to a land that has low incidences of the coronavirus and what better place than Cambodia which is a haven for cultural tourism to get away for a relaxing vacation.
The Ministry spokesman Top Sopheak said: “The coronavirus pandemic has taken a toll in the tourism sector and there is a need to revive it. We need to aggressively promote our incredible tourist destinations which have the richest traditions and cultural heritage.”
The ministry plans to promote tourism, just like many other countries, using “travel bubbles” for tourists complying with the stringent Covid-19 measures imposed by the Kingdom to ensure they are free of the disease.
“Cambodia’s Angkor Wat is a wonder – a legacy of Khmer heroes and ancestors – that is priceless. This temple is also one of the wonders of the world,” said Sopheak.
“Therefore, when many famous people visit, it is the pride of our country. We also want to show that in Cambodia, we have the miracle of things, the wonder of people,” he said, adding that it means Cambodia has had many wonderful celebrities visit and admire the temples of Angkor Wat.”
Sopheak said it is difficult to predict when the Covid-19 pandemic will end for countries to reopen the already decimated tourism sector which has virtually come to a standstill but there are positive signals indicating that this sector can be reopened once the situation improves.
