Camping at an untouched steppe in northern Vietnam

Discover the tranquility of Bai Bui, an idyllic destination in Hoa Binh Province, where ancient Tlau trees, grazing animals, and a serene atmosphere await.

Bai Bui Steppe is in Khop Village, Lac Son District, Hoa Binh Province, approximately 140 km from Hanoi, spanning about 9 hectares at an altitude of 600 meters above sea level.

According to Nguyen Duc Sam, a local resident who now works in tourism in the area, it was initially used by the local community as a grazing ground for cattle. However, with the local road renovation in 2022, the spot started drawing visitors.

On May 13, Vu Minh Quang from Hanoi and his friends decided to camp overnight at the steppe after finding it online.

Arriving at around 10 p.m., they could not fully appreciate the scenery due to the darkness, so set up camp and rested. The following morning, they were amazed by the breathtaking view that greeted them.

At dawn, they found themselves facing a vast, flat, and green lawn. Local buffaloes and cows leisurely grazed or wallowed in mud pools to cool off.

Surrounding them were vegetable and corn fields.

Despite the summer temperatures, the expansive area offers a pleasant and comfortable environment in contrast to the heat of the city. The shade of the trees offers a cool and refreshing breeze, adding to the comfort and enjoyment of the surroundings.

The trees here, known as Tlau trees, have been preserved by the People’s Council of Ngoc Lau Commune since 2007.

With over 60 Tlau trees that are hundreds of years old, the steppe is among the few areas that proudly retain these ancient specimens.

Tlau trees hold cultural significance for the Muong ethnic group and are used in their cuisine. The young leaves of the tree are consumed with certain dishes like salted and sour meats.

In summer, the trees offer green shade, while in winter, their leaves turn yellow and red, creating an autumnal scene amidst the steppe.

The best time to camp here is during winter from October to December. However, the summer also showcases its own beauty, with the vibrant green hues of nature.

The locals have set up swings made from bamboo or wood under the Tlau trees for visitors. Camping and taking photos at the steppe is free.

Since the steppe is still a developing destination with limited tourist services, it remains untouched.

There is a nearby homestay available for overnight stays and a few beverage stalls. The price range for a homestay room is from VND300,000 to VND500,000 ($13 to $21). The rental price for a tent for 4 to 5 people is about VND500,000.

It is advisable for visitors to bring their own food, water, and camping equipment in advance to be self-sufficient and save on expenses.

Bai Bui Steppe offers a quiet and secluded atmosphere, as there are not many tourists.

Quang considers it his favorite camping spot, saying it is an ideal place to escape the summer heat and experience a change of scenery.

As the steppe is located within the Ngoc Son – Ngo Luong Nature Reserve, visitors must be mindful of preserving the landscape.

Campfires should only be made using stoves that are at least a meter high to prevent grass fires. Climbing or causing any damage to the Tlau trees, which are monitored by forest rangers, is not allowed.

Visitors are advised to bring insect repellent to protect themselves. Visitors have the option to park their vehicles at nearby tourist facilities for a fee of VND5,000.
