Cambodia strengthened vocational training for community-based tour guides as the Ministry of Tourism (MoT) moved to improve tourism service quality and develop a more skilled workforce across the country’s community tourism destinations.

The effort was advanced through the Cambodia Hospitality Training Project (HoKa), with the MoT and Swisscontact reviewing and revising training materials for the Community Tour Guide competency to better reflect labour market needs and the practical realities of community-based tourism.
A technical meeting held from Monday until yesterday in Siem Reap province brought together around 18 participants, including officials from the Ministry of Tourism’s HoKa Project Management Committee Secretariat, Swisscontact representatives, HoKa trainers from tourism departments in the project’s 12 target provinces and other relevant stakeholders.
Under the guidance of the Ministry of Tourism Director of the Department of Tourism Vocational Skills Training and Chair of the HoKa Project Management Committee Secretariat, Chuob Ratana, Ministry of Tourism Deputy Director Puthea Sophannora participated in the technical review.
The meeting focused on improving four key training resources: the training manual, PowerPoint presentations, activity documents and trainee workbooks. The materials were updated to ensure they were clear, relevant, practical and suitable for effective use by both trainers and trainees.
Participants also shared professional experience and technical input based on conditions in the 12 target provinces, aiming to ensure that the training reflected the needs of communities and the evolving requirements of Cambodia’s tourism industry.
