Cambodia set to host World Cycling tour

An elite world cycling race will take place in Cambodia early next year taking in Cambodia’s coastal bays.

Dubbed the ‘1st World Cycling Tour of Cambodia Bay’, the race is scheduled to take place between January 4 to 6 of 2020 and will be the first event of its kind in Cambodia. It will be organized by the Ministry of Tourism, the National Olympic Committee of Cambodia, the International Cycling Federation, and the Cambodian Cycling Federation.

Speaking at a press conference in the evening on Friday, Vath Chamroeun, Secretary of State of the Ministry of Tourism and Secretary General of the National Olympic Committee of Cambodia, said it would be a very high-level sporting event with professional cyclists set to compete.

Cambodia, although at a lower level, will also submit a team as the event will be an opportunity for Cambodian cyclists to prepare for the 2023 SEA Games.

The race will feature professional riders from around the world, from at least 19 to 20 countries with estimates ranging from 100 and 300 riders.

Bruno Bodard, Executive Director of the World’s Most Beautiful Bay Club, attending the press conference, said that at the 7th Sea Festival in Koh Kong in December 2018, he said he had found support from Prime Minister Hun Sen to boost the tourism of Cambodia’s coast.

Mr. Chamroeun explained that participating cyclists would earn ranking points from the International Federation.

He affirmed that the competition’s organizing committee would cooperate with the local authorities at all levels to ensure smooth competition.
