In a key development aimed at bolstering tourism and connectivity between India and Cambodia, direct flights are set to commence between the two countries starting June 16. This move, facilitated by Cambodia’s Angkor Air will help in enhancing travel opportunities for both Indian tourists visiting Cambodia and Cambodian visitors exploring India.
Speaking to WION, Cambodian Ambassador Kuong Koy, said these direct flights are the result of concerted efforts by leaders from both countries, especially the civil aviation ministers. Ambassador Kuong Koy expressed his joy, calling this development “a dream come true,” highlighting the benefits of increased connectivity, particularly in promoting tourism due to Cambodia’s rich heritage of Hindu and Buddhist temples.
This new direct flight service is expected to not only significantly increase the flow of tourists between the two countries but also facilitate easier travel for those seeking medical tourism in India, which is known for its lower treatment costs compared to neighbouring countries.
Cambodia is home to Angkor Wat, recognised as the world’s largest religious structure. Built in the early 12th century, the temple was originally dedicated to the Hindu deity Vishnu.
Seila Hul, under secretary of state for Cambodia’s Ministry of Tourism, anticipated a rise in Indian tourists visiting Cambodia, emphasising the positive impact of these direct flights on bilateral tourism.
Seila Hul said, “the first flight from Phnom Penh to Delhi will increase the number of Indian tourists coming to our country, and also from Cambodia to India.” Chhay Sivlin, President of Cambodia’s Tourism Association, echoed this sentiment, stating, “India is rich in culture, and India and Cambodia have similarities in culture. We have Hinduism, and for Hindu people, Cambodia has a lot of opportunity.”
With flights scheduled four times a week (Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and Sunday) between Phnom Penh and New Delhi, the direct air links offer convenient options for travellers.
