ASEAN

ASEAN’s Common Competency-Based Tourism Curriculum

A “Common ASEAN Tourism Curriculum”, completed in June 2007 by the ASEAN Australia Development Cooperation Program (AADCP) was endorsed by the ASEAN members, hence the GMS countries, although not applied yet this referential is meant to be applied by all countries. Focused on Competency Based Training (CBT), which is recognized worldwide as the most effective means of delivering vocational training, AADCP’s curriculum provides trainees with the skills, knowledge and attitudes necessary to demonstrate competence.

AADCP based its curriculum on a suite of competency standards provided to the project as building blocks, including: “Hotel Services – Restaurant Services”; “Hotel Services – Front Office and Housekeeping”; and “Travel – Travel and Tour Services”.

AADCP aligned those competencies to six “Labour Divisions”:-

  • Food Production (FP)
  • Food and Beverage Services (FB)
  • Tour Operation (TO)
  • Travel Agencies (TA)
  • Front Office (FO)
  • Housekeeping (HK)

The proposed curriculum is the culmination of consultation with ASEAN-member countries and builds upon two draft proposals. MTCO believes tourism policy makers, educators, trainers, and human resources professionals in the GMS stand to benefit from accessing and referring to these comprehensive resources.
