Objectives and Functions of the Ministry of Hotels and Tourism
(a) Implementing the systematic development of hotel and tourism industry.
(b) Implementing in a timely manner the policies and guidelines laid down by the State Peace and Development Council and the Cabinet of the Government of the Union of Myanmar.
(c) Developing and encouraging national and international investment opportunities in the hotels and tourism industry.
(d) Developing opportunities for the wider participation of the private entrepreneurs in the hotel and tourism industry.
(e) Setting programmes and guidelines in order to arouse keen interest from the international tourists visiting Myanmar and to promote Myanmar as a world renown tourist destination.
(f) Organizing workshops and seminars; exhibition and shows; trainings to upgrade the quality; standards and technical skills of the hotel and tourism industry.
(g) Creating awareness of best practices in developing communities higher standards of living and job opportunities in line with the development of tourism.
(h) Targetting towards the arrival of one million tourists to Myanmar in accordance with the guidelines of the Government.
(i) Cooperating with ASEAN Member Countries and neighbouring countries in tourism activities.
Background
Prior to 1962, there were about 15 private travel agencies and 6 hotels which were nationalized in 1964. Subsequently, Trade Corporation No. 20 (Hotel and Tourism Corporation)was formed on December 20, 1965 with Inya Lake Hotel, Strand Hotel, Taunggyi Hotel, Ngapali Hotel and Tourist Burma under its management.
It was reorganized as Hotel and Tourist Corporation (HTC) on July 27, 1976.
Hotel and Tourist Corporation was later renamed as Myanmar Hotels and Tourism Services under the State Law and Order Restoration Council in 1988. Under the Notification No. 54/92 of September 24, 1992, the Ministry of Hotels and Tourism was formed with the following departments.
(1) Directorate of Hotels and Tourism
(2) Myanmar Hotels and Tourism Services
(3) Restaurant and Beverages Enterprise
Restaurant and Beverages Enterprise was reorganized as Beverages Department under the Myanmar Hotels and Tourism Services on April 1, 2000.
