UNESCO Recognizes Vietnam's Xoan Singing

UNESCO voted to recognize Xoan singing in Vietnam's Phu Tho Province as an Intangible Cultural Heritage in Need of Urgent Protection at the 6th meeting of UNESCO Intergovernmental Committee for the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage in Bali on 23 November. Xoan singing, a vocal art of villages in Phu Tho, is usually performed in front of the communal house during springtime village festivals. Clouds Threaten Clear Skies over Vientiane's Hotels

"The forecast for Vientiane's hotels looks sunny," Horwath HTL's Shyn Yee Ho-Strangas told the 5th Lanith Quarterly Symposium at Vientiane's Settha Palace on Friday, 9 December 2011. Government Gears Up for "Visit Laos Year2012"

The government's preparations for Visit Laos Year 2012 are continuing despite recent changes to the leadership and organization of its tourism arm. Deputy Minister of Information, Culture, and Tourism Buangeun Xaphouvong confirmed that the preparations will continue as planned even though the former Lao National Tourism Administration has now merged with the Ministry of Information and Culture. Myanmar Begins to Blossom

"Travel Trade Magazine" has reported that tour operators are starting to see increased interest in Myanmar holidays in the wake of the recent visit to Myanmar by US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. Pamela Lassers of Abercrombie & Kent said the company created three programs for 2012 in response to the rapidly growing interest for travel in Myanmar. General Tours World Traveler Marketing Manager Mickey Huang said they are placing Myanmar itineraries on their 2012-2013 brochure. HCMC May Open Walking Streets

Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC)has completed a study to introduce walking streets in the city's downtown districts, but success will depend on whether local communities agree to close busy streets to traffic, TTR Weekly reported. HCMC Department of Planning and Architecture's Centre for Zoning Information identified the streets around Ben Thanh Market and Saigon Opera House as a popular tourist area with shops and restaurants.
